Brunch in Parque das Nações: 9 Ideas for an Awesome Weekend by the Tagus

Parque das Nações is the part of Lisbon that was built all at once, for Expo ’98, and it still feels that way: wide riverfront, glass architecture, long walks with the Tagus on one side. It also happens to be an easy place to spend a whole day without a car. Here is one workable plan — brunch first, then the river, with times and distances that we’ve actually walked.

The old town is beautiful and crowded; Parque das Nações is neither old nor crowded, and on a weekend morning that’s exactly what you want. Everything below is within half an hour on foot from Oriente station.

It starts with brunch at Sense of Coffee and follows the riverfront north. No backtracking, no transport needed until the evening.

Our café sits five minutes from Oriente station and about the same from the Oceanário. For brunch: eggs Benedict on brioche, hashbrown waffles with cured salmon, syrniki, or cherry pie if you start with dessert and answer to no one. Coffee runs from espresso and cappuccino to V60 pour-over and the Bumble — espresso with orange juice, which sounds wrong and works.

Hours: 9:00–16:00 daily — the kitchen works the whole time.

Tip: come by 10:00 — the room fills between 11:00 and 13:00. There are two terraces if the weather cooperates.

A five-to-seven-minute walk from the café. One of the largest aquariums in Europe — about 8,000 animals, with the central tank (sharks, rays, a sunfish) built so that you keep meeting it from different floors.

Tip: buy tickets online and skip the queue. Budget an hour to an hour and a half.

From the Oceanário, walk north along Passeio de Neptuno toward the Vasco da Gama Bridge. River on the right, sculptures and gardens on the left — Jardim Garcia de Orta keeps plants brought from the former colonies. The full stretch takes 30–60 minutes depending on how often you stop.

Tip: coffee to go from the café, drunk on the grass by the water, replaces a second breakfast.

The southern cable car station is about five minutes past the Oceanário. The ride is 10–12 minutes over the water, with the bridge and the whole district under you.

Tip: the combined Oceanário + cable car ticket is noticeably cheaper than two separate ones.

Get off at the northern station by the Vasco da Gama Tower and wander back through Jardim de Água, past the fountains. Look for Bordalo II’s «Iberian Lynx» — a sculpture assembled from garbage, which is the point.

Tip: 20–30 minutes, more if you photograph things.

Ten minutes from the tower. A regular mall — food court, shops, a cinema — which is sometimes exactly what a long day needs, especially with children.

The country’s biggest concert venue is five minutes from the mall. Check the schedule in advance — if something is on tonight, the whole day arranges itself around it.

Rent a bike through the GIRA app and ride the riverfront paths back toward Oriente. 30–45 minutes, flat the whole way.

A rooftop bar near MEO Arena: cocktails, the river, the bridge lit up. There’s a sushi menu if dinner should be light.
